League of Legends and Valorant developer Riot Games is endorsing and accepting the spread of sports wagering in its esports competitions, the business revealed Thursday. In a change revealed by president of releasing an esports at Riot Games John Needham, Riot will permit esports gambling sponsorships for Tear 1 League of Legends and Valorant groups in the Americas, Europe, Middle East, and Africa.

Riot states it's doing so for a variety of factors - one being that esports betting already exists throughout its competitive games, and according to Needham, "70% of bets across all sports are put in uncontrolled markets with bookies who aren't certified."

"Our company believe it's better to engage in enabling betting sponsorships - thoughtfully, thoroughly, and with the best protections - than to sit on the sidelines while risks to fans and stability go untreated," Needham wrote in a post on Riot's website.

Needham says that League of Legends and Valorant esports teams have actually pressed for the change in allowing sports wagering sponsors "to open sponsorship opportunities with wagering brand names to generate additional revenue for their financial health." Riot will also gain from the earnings made from betting on League and Valorant, but pledges to invest a part of that refund into its esports programs.
